This week marks the end of the fourth week David has been at Ft. Leonard Wood. Only 38 more days until he comes home for Christmas Exodus! I am so happy and it will be THE BEST Christmas gift EVER!
There have, of course, been highs and lows since David left for training, but I am happy to report that there have been more highs than lows. This is due LARGELY in part to all of the wonderful friends and family in my life. David is doing well and is in good spirits, but he does miss home, family, and familiarity. He loves receiving letters as they encourage him and help keep pushing him forward…he is in a place where, most of the time, he is the only one really pulling for him – and I know that must be a difficult place to be!
The worst news I have gotten so far is that the structure of Officer’s Candidate School (OCS) is drastically changing (which begins the last week in January 2011). Originally, we were under the impression that David would be off on the weekends and we could commute back and forth between Ft. Benning and Tally, making the separation not so difficult. Well, unfortunately, that is (part of) what is changing … he will have no weekend passes (i.e. weekends off) until the end of training. So, another 3 months of not seeing my hubs. During a six month period, we will be together for two weeks – rest assured, this is the absolute most horrid thing ever! There is “separation pay” as a part of his paycheck, but I know for a FACT that whatever it is, it isn’t anywhere NEAR what it should be…because (being together) is priceless! I encourage each of you to remember that when you go home to your spouse/ significant other each night…and remember, ALWAYS kiss goodnight (there may come a time when you will not be able to…)
On a MORE positive note, here are some photos that David and I had taken the weekend before he left for Basic Training. ALL photos were taken by David Donaldson of Donaldson Photography. If you like what you see here, I strongly suggest you check out his website ~ he is amazing!!! http://donaldsonphotography.net/index.html

Oh! The Places You’ll Go!
Congratulations!
You’re off and away!
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.
And you may not find any you’ll want to go down. In that case, of course, you’ll head straight out of town. It’s opener there in the wide open air.
Out there things can happen and frequently do to people as brainy and footsy as you.
And when things start to happen, don’t worry. Don’t stew. Just go right along. You’ll start happening too.
Oh! The Places You’ll Go!
You’ll be on your way up!
You’ll be seeing great sights!
You’ll join the high fliers who soar to high heights.
Except when you don’t.
Because, sometimes, you won’t.
I’m sorry to say so but, sadly, it’s true that Bang-ups and Hang-ups can happen to you.
You can get all hung up in a prickle-ly perch. And your gang will fly on. You’ll be left in a Lurch.
You’ll come down from the Lurch with an unpleasant bump. And the chances are, then, that you’ll be in a Slump.
And when you’re in a Slump, you’re not in for much fun. Un-slumping yourself is not easily done.
You will come to a place where the streets are not marked. Some windows are lighted. But mostly they’re darked. A place you could sprain both your elbow and chin! Do you dare to stay out? Do you dare to go in? How much can you lose? How much can you win?
And if you go in, should you turn left or right…or right-and-three-quarters? Or, maybe, not quite? Or go around back and sneak in from behind? Simple it’s not, I’m afraid you will find, for a mind-maker-upper to make up his mind.
You can get so confused that you’ll start in to race down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space, headed, I fear, toward a most useless place.
Waiting for a train to go or a bus to come, or a plane to go or the mail to come, or the rain to go or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow or waiting around for a Yes or No or waiting for their hair to grow. Everyone is just waiting.
Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite or waiting around for Friday night or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil, or a Better Break or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants or a wig with curls, or Another Chance. Everyone is just waiting.
No! That’s not for you!
Somehow you’ll escape all that waiting and staying. You’ll find the bright places where Boom Bands are playing. With banner flip-flapping, once more you’ll ride high! Ready for anything under the sky. Ready because you’re that kind of a guy!
Oh, the places you’ll go! There is fun to be done! There are points to be scored. There are games to be won. And the magical things you can do with that ball will make you the winning-est winner of all. Fame! You’ll be famous as famous can be, with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.
Except when they don’t. Because, sometimes, they won’t.
I’m afraid that some times you’ll play lonely games too. Games you can’t win ‘cause you’ll play against you.
All Alone!
Whether you like it or not, Alone will be something you’ll be quite a lot.
And when you’re alone, there’s a very good chance you’ll meet things that scare you right out of your pants. There are some, down the road between hither and yon, that can scare you so much you won’t want to go on.
But on you will go though the weather be foul. On you will go though your enemies prowl. On you will go though the Hakken-Kraks howl. Onward up many a frightening creek, though your arms may get sore and your sneakers may leak. On and on you will hike. And I know you’ll hike far and face up to your problems whatever they are.
You’ll get mixed up, of course, as you already know. You’ll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go. So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left.
And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and ¾ percent guaranteed.)
Kid, you’ll move mountains!
So…be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray or Mordecai Ale Van Allen O’Shea, you’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So…get on your way!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.
You’ll look up and down streets. Look’em over with care. About some you will say, “I don’t choose to go there.” With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet, you’re too smart to go down a not-so-good street.
And you may not find any you’ll want to go down. In that case, of course, you’ll head straight out of town. It’s opener there in the wide open air.

You’ll join the high fliers who soar to high heights.
You won’t lag behind, because you’ll have the speed. You’ll pass the whole gang and you’ll soon take the lead. Wherever you fly, you’ll be best of the best. Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.
Except when you don’t.
Because, sometimes, you won’t.

D-DAY!
Pheeewwww…OK, so I’m not going to lie, today was a DOOZY! Everything is such a blur, I don’t even know where to begin…but here is my best attempt – military style!
Monday @
0400: Wake-up call! Mariann (David’s sister) and I said our good-byes to David at the MEPS hotel (which was VERY nice, by the way…and under any other circumstance, I would have enjoyed it a whole lot more!)
1700 - 1900: Came Back to Tally (with “David”…I felt as though I was forgetting something in Jacksonville…and decided it was David, so I improvised.)

0500: David checked in with MEPS…ate breakfast (I hope!!!) – Mariann and I couldn’t go back to sleep, so we decided to go ahead and start our day.
0600: David left the MEPS hotel for the MEPS facility. Mariann and I had breakfast (they didn’t start serving until 0630, though…slightly inconvenient, considering we had been up for over two hours...)
0640: David ??? – We grew tired of the beautiful scenery at the hotel, so we decided to track down a Starbucks…Heaven in a cup ;-)
0700: Cha-Ching…Starbucks Found! Grande non-fat peppermint white chocolate mocha with whip, pleeeeze!
0800: We checked into the MEPS Facility…went through security…and waited.
0900: …and waited
1000: …and waited
1100: …and waited
1200: …FINALLY, the ceremony we were waiting for =)

FIVE MORE DAYS!!!
Where has the time gone?! I can’t believe this weekend I will be taking David over to Jacksonville for him to be shipped off to Basic – time truly does fly by! Our schedules until then are booked SOLID: Tomorrow night, we will be supporting the Coon Bottom Fire Department’s annual Fish Fry (yum!), then Friday night it is off to small group (more fun!), then Saturday we will be having some patriotic photos done with the best photographer in town, hands down (David Donaldson)! AND, on top of all that, we have decided to celebrate our four year anniversary this Saturday (two months early) since David will still be in training when the real day arrives (…and I will be in Key West anyways ;-) ) Then…it’s D-DAY (“David’s Day”!) Sunday morning, we will be off to church, have our yummo lunch together, then we are off and away to Jacksonville.
This past weekend we had a skeet shoot that was LONG overdue…one last hoorah before David’s parting. We had a BLAST!
Here are some other photos from the work party David's co-workers had for him =) By the way, that cake was DELISH (not to mention, VERY creative!)
I will post photos of David’s swearing in ceremony as soon as I have them – Stay tuned!

16 Days and Counting…
So here is my last entry for September 2010…yet another “last” that is bittersweet.
This week has been nothing short of amazing! As I mentioned earlier, David and I enjoyed our “last” vacay together this past weekend before he ships out to Officer’s Basic Training. It rained ALL weekend, but it was A-OK since we were able to enjoy the whole weekend together <3>

I must say though, it was VERY difficult keeping a certain secret from him ALL weekend long! David’s very thoughtful and caring co-workers planned a covert surprise for him and they let me in loop about a week and a half out from the day =) I am NOT good at keeping secrets from anyone (David especially) but I was DETERMINED to achieve my task ;-) Mission accomplished!
The CFO of Florida, Alex Sink, in conjunction with the Governor of Florida, Charlie Crist, and Cabinet, recognized David for his dedicated, selfless service as a representative of the Department of Environmental Protection for the past six years, and for his decision to serve our great country. If you would like to hear it with your own ears, this is the audio link to the September 28, 2010 Meeting of the Governor and Cabinet. Feel free to enjoy the entire Cabinet meeting, or if you are short on time, David's recognition begins approximately around the one hour mark ;-)
http://www.myflorida.com/myflorida/cabinet/agenda10/0928/audioindex.html
Also a point of interest, David was introduced to three Lieutenant Generals…that would be a Three Star General. Lieutenant General Kent Keen was one of those Generals David met, and General Keen was also recognized by the Governor and Cabinet for his leadership during the Haitian earthquake relief response. So here is all this THREE business popping up in our lives ~ again ;-) Coincidence? You decide.
Here are some pics from this fabulous encounter with Charlie Crist, Governor of Florida; Bill McCollum, Attorney General of Florida; Alex Sink, Chief Financial Officer of Florida; and Charles H. Bronson, Commissioner of Florida.
So, what have I learned from all this? That a WHOLE LOTTA people care a WHOLE LOT about my hubs and they are going to miss him just as much as I will!!! THANK YOU to everyone that is on this journey with us ~ your support and understanding means more than we can express! We are truly blessed more than we deserve.

24 Days and Counting...
There are four weeks remaining before David leaves for Basic; two of which I am out of town traveling for work. =(
This week, I have been in Gatorville, Florida, and we are scheduled to return to Tally tomorrow afternoon. Tonight we went to a very nice sushi place for dinner called the Dragon Fly. It was pretty much amazing and I am not even a sushi lover. I ordered the stir fry scallops and the grilled chicken roll ~ ok, maybe that's not REAL sushi, but like I said, it was really yummo!! My co-workers ordered the wantons and the Dragonfly, which were both just as wonderful! I will definitely be going back when I am going through Gainesville or Orlando =) I really hope to have the hubs with me next time I go!!! He would absolutely LOVE it too!
It's been a lot of fun having the opportunity to travel the state for work. It will be a true blessing once David is going full speed and I no longer have him to come home to each evening. We are hoping it will help keep me so busy I won't even realize he is away...ok, maybe that is getting my hopes too high. But, I will get to travel to some pretty neat places...Vero Beach, The Forgotten Coast, Palm Beach, and even the Florida Keys =)
I've got plans for just about every weekend he is gone with the exception of maybe two weekends...and I'm sure those will fill quickly.
This upcoming weekend, David and I will be heading to the beach for a nice, long, relaxing weekend - our last weekend vacation together before he leaves...like so many things, this too is bittersweet.
Til next time =)

TLH to ATL and back again =)
OK – So I have had quite the case of writers block over the past few months…probably my way of subconsciously ignoring the obvious.
Anyways, to bring all of my faithful blog followers up to speed, the 30 day countdown to takeoff has officially begun (as of yesterday…I procrastinate, remember?)
Last weekend we went to Atlanta to watch the Braves v. Cardinals baseball game – the only thing that would have made it even more perfect is if Muses Supermassive Blackhole was playing in the background when the homerun was hit in the 12th inning to win the game - I guess you would have to be a Twilight fan to understand that one…
We are going to the FSU game tomorrow...we are both really excited and are looking forward to it!

Ernie Sims Weekend
Ok, so I haven’t posted anything since July 4th weekend =( I do have some other photos and videos from our weekend with Mel and David on the Flint River...
…On a river bank with all my friends
A big old rope tied to a limb
And you're a big old wuss if you don't jump in the water
And when that summer sun starts to beatin' down
And you don't know what to do
Grab your swimming trunks, ice up that old Igloo
And drive until the map turns blue…
I will find those and get them posted asap =)
About two weekends ago, David and I went to the Ernie Sims Celebrity weekend. David actually played high school football with Ernie (his claim to fame LOL!) so it was nice getting to see Ernie again, as neither of us have seen him since high school. We also got to hang out with the folks at the Army tent. This was the first time I had met any of them, so it was nice to FINALLY be introduced to them. Now you can see the face behind the names of those who have kindly helped my husband start this journey.
Next weekend, we will be going to the beach - fingers crossed for NO oil!!! We will probably take one more short trip together before he leaves for Basic. Only 85 more days until his training starts ~ More updates to come!

**Attention: Jason is NO longer a 5 Jump Chump**
OK, I had to smile when I heard that term too! Today, Jason got to go on his sixth jump. It was so weird…I got a text from him today saying that he was just sitting on the plane all geared up and waiting (impatiently I am sure!) to go. And me…well I was just sitting at my desk at work, adding up a bunch of numbers to make sure the correct amount of interest was paid to our client (trying to keep “SPLAT” images out of my mind). Hmmmm…nice strong shot of reality. I am oober happy for him and so proud of him though! My place (right now) is to provide a strong support system for my pals =)
Here are some pics from Jason’s exciting day =D

OK, I get it…
My Army Wife Handbook came in the mail over the weekend =D I decided to start from the top of the list and go from there ~ so I am going to read through it and then probably get the “HELP I have a life too!” book next ;-)
So far, I have briefly read through some of the history of army wives dating back to the 1800’s. No wonder there is still such a stigma between Officer and Enlisted wives. Here is some of what I have discovered:
During the Civil War era (quite an oxymoron in my opinion), officers married the socially prominent daughters of the well-to-do who carried the social customs of the ante-bellum period with them to the frontier garrisons; Enlisted men on the other hand, were forbidden to marry. This policy was ignored more often than not, and the men married laundresses, the only women with official Army status.
During World War I, officer’s wives continued to live glittery lives, enjoying themselves during daily leisure time and focusing on entertaining their husbands’ superior officers during the evenings. The wives of this era were not unaware of the need to make an impression. They became the “Army’s aristocracy”.
While officer’s wives were busy making impressions, the soldier’s wives and families were often less fortunate, facing overcrowding and substandard living conditions in some instances.
During this time, it was very rare for officer’s wives and soldiers’ wives to interact with each other. Wives lived with their husbands and housing for officer’s and soldiers were located in different areas – thus becoming known as “soap-suds row” and “officer’s row”.
In the early twentieth century, the role of officer’s wives became more formalized – they learned to ride, learned to play golf and tennis, and continued to entertain guests.
The War Department permitted enlisted men to marry upon approval from their superior officer, provided it was for the good of the public interest.
Later in the century, wives’ clubs were more formally organized, split between Officers, Noncommissioned officers (NCO’s), and Enlisted wives clubs. Customs and courtesies were updated, and the time is probably most commonly remembered for formal parties and galas. During this time, wives also staffed the first nurseries, floral and thrift shops, and youth centers.
Of course, we know that the Army of today is much different…but it is also much the same. To see and comprehend where we have come from helps explain where we are now, and more importantly, where we need to be in the future.
On this journey, I support two members of the Army: The first is my husband, an Army officer candidate that has much to offer the United States Military. They really do not know (yet) what a tremendous asset is at their finger tips. I know that with time, dedication, and the proper training, he will surpass all expectations. The second is our very best, most trusted friend, and faithful worker, Jason, who is now a Combat Engineer. The two of them have been the best of friends since sixth grade and absolutely nothing regarding their relationship has changed. Their friendship was amazing to watch cultivate from their younger days until now. It has provided me with a true picture of what friendship should be like.
I decided to make this entry because I believe it is important for “enlisted” AND “officer” wives to know that not all (potential) officers wives are snots (ß best adjective I can come up with at the current moment!) I now understand the history and stigma attached to this (b/c I took the time to research it), and also understand that a lot of women/ spouses do wear rank. However, I hold both of these gentlemen very dear to my heart; their rank, duties, and what medals they may or may not have (or will have) on their uniform do not determine my actions/reactions to them (or their family), or the feelings I hold for each of them, for that matter. The same will be true of each and every other service member and their family I have contact with. It helps being able to see the pasture from both sides of the fence.
I pray that I will have humility, understanding, patience, and most of all, Godliness, now and during the future, so that I may help the many women (including myself) during this journey. I look to the woman in Proverbs 31 and strive to become like her. More on this to come =)

MAN! ~ lost it!
So...David and I spoke with Jason on the phone tonight. He is now at Ft. Bragg =/ Wish he would have been a bit closer....but what are ya gonna do, right?! He "should be" finding out tomorrow when he will be going over seas. All of this is becoming more and more real to me...it is like a reality SLAP in the face. Needless to say...this is pretty much a picture of what I looked like most of this evening:
WHAT am I gonna do?!!!??? Must be stong, must be strong...I seriously think I just may lose my mind when David is gone...that is if there is anything left of it to lose after going through all this with Jason too!
Until then...Hooah!
So, to ease my pain, I gobbled up 3 oreo cookies and a small glass of milk (seeing as how it is almost 10PM, I decided to not consume the whole package of cookies)...NOT very good for my waistline =(

How to be a wife of a U.S. Army Officer...mm hmm
OK – so I have began the “research” on how to be a fabulous Army Officer’s wife…the unspoken rules of what is to come/ what my future responsibilities will be. To put it bluntly, I am in for a REAL experience! I have found blogs of those that have come before me to be most helpful.
There is A LOT on the internet regarding officer vs. enlisted wives and the stigma that is attached to it…I feel like I have been knocked down before I have even tried. But, I know there will always be those people that are unhappy NO matter what, and frankly there is nothing I can do about that…so I will just have to do the best I can with the people I come into contact with and just be myself…
So, I have been trying to find some books on the topic. So far, I have narrowed it down to these:
1. The Army Wife Handbook: A Complete Social Guide

3. Help! I'm a Military Spouse--I Get a Life Too!: How to Craft a Life for You As You Move With the Military, Second Edition
4. The Military Wives' Cookbook: 200 Years of Traditions, Recipes, and Remembrances {mostly b/c we all know I can’t cook – don’t think the guests would enjoy asparagus and orange roughy for dinner ;-) }
A lot of the websites say that there are a TON of books on the etiquette and how to host teas/ coffees/ etc. and more importantly, when it is appropriate to do so, but I have found none of those yet (in the very short amount of time I have spend researching the subject). The book that is number one on the list appears to be the most formal of the books…not that I am a very formal person, but the information is stuff I definitely need to know…apparently.
So, Stay tuned...this should be a GREAT blog on the blind leading the blind :-)
